Two days passed before Matthews plan was ready to be executed. It started out fairly simply. Three teams would be sent out to complete targeted attacks on government intelligence buildings. Using the chaos as cover, the 1-stars would overtake the national broadcast and Matthew would be on every screen across the nation. Once that happened Matthew would speak to the people whilst the government tracked him down. After that, the plan depended on what happened to Matthew once they tracked the broadcast.
As the first of the three strike-teams left Matthew made his way to the safe-house med-bay. A tall doctor stood at the entrance, having expected Matthews arrival.
“We finished the weapon this morning as requested sir. You will only have one shot and it must enter his blood stream or the drug will not take. If you want it to have any effect though, it must be done publicly. Nothing will change if this happens in private. Before the news spreads our window will have passed.” Matthew nodded at the doctor’s advice and asked to see the weapon.
The doctor led him to a table with a few rebooted monitors on top of it showing schematics Matthew couldn’t read. The doctor handed Matthew a thin metal pen and showed him how it worked.
The pen was a shell holding a poison. Matthew would have to stab the point into the flesh of his target and press the cap to release the toxin. As Matthew headed towards the door the doctor called out and gave him one last piece of advice.
“It is imperative that you break the skin. If you don’t the poison will be useless and you will be in more danger than if you were simply captured.”
When it became clear that Alistair would not be able to wring any useful information out of Kiara two guards came in to remove him, leaving Kiara alone. The woman who had overseen Kiara’s torture since her arrival walked in a couple of hours later and sat across from her.
“Kiara, why don’t you help us out? No one here wants to hurt you. You need to understand however, that what you are doing is not in the interest of the public. No one stands to gain if the government falls and our nation is plunged into anarchy.” Kiara smirked, knowing that nothing the woman could say would break her.
“Spoken like a true government lackey. Tell me, did they give you a script before you came in here, or did you come up with that on the spot?” The woman sighed, an expression of forced sympathy on her face. Slowly she stood up, as if giving Kiara time to reconsider, and walked out. A cruel smirk grew on her face as she left the room.
“Start phase two. She needs more incentive to talk.” The two guards outside nodded in response, walked in to grab Kiara, and dragged her back to the dark stone room she had spent most of her captive days in.
So this section was a bit shorter than usual but I felt it was a more natural part to stop at. Otherwise the section would end up being around 700 words long.
Any ideas on what phase two might be? Will Matthew save Kiara or will it be too late?
Matthew’s plan was simple. He would get captured and serve as a distraction whilst a rescue operation for Kiara happened. When he first told his advisors of his plan they called him insane and contemplated his removal as the face of the revolution. He laughed at their worries and cryptically replied that he had no intentions of remaining captured, only of removing the leverage the government held over him.
Over the next couple of days Matthew met with scientists, ballistics experts, doctors, and ex-military. When asked about his meetings he smiled at his advisors and said he was preparing a contingency, just in case he wasn’t able to escape capture by the government.
Less than a day later 1-stars everywhere were working tirelessly. Preparations for Matthews capture and Kiara’s escape were keeping everyone busy. Soldier training intensified, weapons were mass produced, and the medical wings were expanded to account for an influx of injured soldiers. If Matthew’s plans failed it would be the perfect opportunity for the 1-stars to invade. With the government focusing on his capture it would be easier to slip past their defences and take out larger targets.
Matthew knew that his arrest would distract the government enough for 1-stars to target some of the more important government buildings and was organising an assault on the central energy plant. What he didn’t know however, was that some members of his cabinet were more than willing to let him go to jail if it meant that another assault could be mounted, and perhaps one of them could take control in Matthew’s absence.
Hey! So this post has taken a while to get out and honestly, I can’t wait to finish this story! There should only be five more posts from Uniform and I’ve written the next three already so we’re almost there! They should be up over the next couple of days and I’ll also be posting about writers block and my experiences with that throughout the writing of Uniform so keep an eye out for that post!
Altair sat across from Kiara in the dimly lit room, separated only by an old wooden table. He sat still, held in place by Kiara’s fierce glare. Both of them waited for the other to speak, unwilling to be the first to bend. Eventually Altair spoke, fed up with the prolonged silence.
“Why did you ask to speak with me?” Kiara took a moment to continue staring at him, collecting her thoughts.
“You were once a 1-star were you not? Before your time as a government lackey?” Despite his irritation at her wording he nodded. Kiara hummed in acknowledgement before continuing.
“Why then, if I may ask, would you aid in the capture of the figurehead of a revolution aiming to give rights to the group you were once a part of?” Kiara’s voice was low and dangerous. Both of them knew she could not do anything to Altair without being punished but Altair knew exactly how much danger he would have been in were they not being watched.
“Ms. Westwood, I can assure you that my actions had nothing to do with my allegiances to my fellow 1-stars, or with Matthew. I have never wanted to put him in any danger. The be truthful I owe him a great deal, he helped me out of a tough situation. Had it been up to me his fate would be a more peaceful one. Sadly, the cards were never in my hand and like many around us, I am simply following the rules in a game that others play.” A look of realisation appeared upon Kiara’s face as Altair spoke.
“You were one of the 1-stars Matthew gave a job to, weren’t you?” she could see by the look that he gave her that she was right and continued speaking.
“What then, could have driven you to betray someone who had risked so much to help you?” Altair looked conflicted before sighing and answering Kiara’s question.
“They have my family.”
Preparations for Matthew’s plan were well underway by the next time the council convened. Weapons were being collected and people were being trained for battle. Matthew knew that when the plan was executed, regardless of the result, there was a chance that the army would react violently and attack the 1-stars and Matthew was making sure that they would not be caught unawares. Contingency plans were being made for every possible scenario and every possible outcome was being calculated. The hope was that if they prepared enough, they would be able to catch the army unawares and survive an assault long enough for the dust to settle after the assassination attempt.
As for the assassination, ideas were flying between the council members. By now they had all accepted that the assassination attempt would become a reality and they were determined to make sure that the best plan was made. Ideas ranged from trying to steal a bomb from the government and planting it by the president’s office, to sending in a spy to infiltrate the president’s council and isolating him from his security team so that someone could kill him.
The plan that they settled on was long and complicated. Each step had to be done exactly on time and according to plan or the assassination would fail. First, groups of 1-stars would be sent around the city where they would simultaneously launch attacks on government buildings around the city. With the army spread out to stop the attacks Matthew and a specialised team would start a prison break to save Kiara and any 1-stars that had been captured throughout the revolution. At this point the plan could take various paths depending on how the president reacted. They needed some way to find out where he was at any time. Matthew knew there was only one way they could get close enough to the president in time.
“I’m going to give myself up.”
So Matthew’s plan is falling into place and Kiara might soon get rescued, but will it happen soon enough? Will Kiara’s meeting with Altair get in the way of Matthew’s plan in any way?
Freezing would be an understatement to how Kiara felt. Three hours had passed since she had been doused in water and left in cold stone room. The only marker of time would be the visit she received every hour where she was asked about Matthews whereabouts. Each time she replied that she wouldn’t tell them anything. The smirk she received as the door was closed let her know how much her suffering entertained the government workers.
Kiara was sure that the fourth hour was coming up based on how much time she thought had passed but she wasn’t sure if she could trust her own judgement anymore. Her thoughts and movements were becoming more sluggish with each passing moments and her skin began taking on a dangerous blue hue. She wanted nothing more than to close her eyes and let sleep overtake her but a small part of her kept shouting for her to fight her sudden fatigue and survive for a little bit more until they saved her to torture another day.
She was beginning to fear that she would lose the battle with her body when the door opened again. The woman who had led her torture sessions previously walked in. She stood in front of Kiara and spoke slowly, as if knowing that Kiara needed more time than usual to understand what she was being told.
“I hear hypothermia is quite a peaceful way to die. Certainly, not the fastest but quite painless. You don’t even feel death nearing, only a tiredness slowly creeping closer with each passing second. At one point your mind begins drifting, you can no longer control your thoughts. I wonder how well you’ll keep your secrets when this happens. When you start seeing talking birds and your loved ones make appearances, will you let anything slip? I guess you’ll find out soon. If you wake up tomorrow we’ve saved you. If not, you will have told us the information we want. Of course, we could bring you back just for the fun, but you’ll never know if that’s the case.” Despite her clouded mind, Kiara knew that the lady was telling the truth, and Kiara knew that she wouldn’t be able to keep the secret of Matthew’s location for long under these circumstances, but she might be able to delay the reveal. With a glare, Kiara spat out her reply at the lady.
“Fine I’ll tell you, but I will only speak to the 1-star who betrayed us.”
So Kiara’s might be meeting Altair soon! What will she tell him? Why is he helping the government? Hope you enjoyed this instalment and remember to subscribe to receive notifications for each post!
“Where is Matthew Sinclair?” These words woke Kiara every day since her capture followed by some punishment for her lack of cooperation. Today they had opted for dousing her in cold water. Kiara did not know how they managed to move her each morning but assumed that they had used a muted version of the sedative that kept her unconscious when she was first brought in.
“How should I know?” Her answer remained the same every day and she had no idea why they thought getting wet would make her change her answer. Yesterday she had been hooked up to 6 clamps attached to different sized batteries. Each unsatisfying answer made a flip switch and a wave of searing pain would shoot through Kiara. If she could go through that without breaking Matthew’s trust, then being wet would be easy.
“Humans are so fragile did you know?” As Kiara was pulled out of the tub the lady who had first interrogated Kiara spoke. Seeing that Kiara wasn’t going to respond the lady continued.
“We can’t survive in conditions beyond our bodies’ comfort zones for long. If we push ourselves too hard we might pass out. If we don’t have enough to eat we might die. There are a number of reasons why our bodies might shut down. We might have had too little to drink, or not slept enough. It might even be for reasons as simple as being too hot or cold.” At this point one of the two men who had submerged Kiara in the water opened a window. A cold breeze whispered gently across Kiara’s damp skin. Goosebumps rose and her pulse quickened as she realised what they planned to do.
“It is so funny how large an impact something as simple as turning down a person’s body temperature can have.” The lady moved closer to Kiara and whispered into her ear.
“In a few hours, when you are begging for sleep and the death that will surely come with it I will decide whether to grant your wish. Who knows, maybe I will flip a coin to decide. Regardless of how it is done I want you to remember this in a few hours and realise how little I care about whether you live or die, and how insignificant I find your pitiful life.”
Hey guys! So it looks like Kiara might be in trouble. Will she get out if it somehow? The uploads the next couple of days should be a little more diverse in terms of categories they fit in rather than just being short stories. That said, Uniform will still be updated at least every other day. Remember to follow if to get notifications regarding posts! Especially now that updates might not be daily.
Matthew didn’t know who to trust. Altair had been the person to open his eyes to the governments oppression of the 1-stars and now Altair was working with the government. Each person that Matthew spoke to could be another government spy and Matthew had no way of knowing where each person’s loyalty was with certainty. The few people that he spoke to was his council, made up of seven 1-stars hand-picked by Kiara. If nothing else, he trusted her to know who he could trust. Even so, he was wary of the information he shared with them.
The distrust he showed the 1-stars was detrimental to the revolution and many raids in the past few days had been unsuccessful as a result. When information reached Matthew, he was reluctant to share it with his council. Each time he decided to include someone else in his planning he remembered seeing Kiara being led out of the granary by soldiers, Altair close behind. Matthew knew that he needed to trust his advisors or the revolution would fail. Reluctantly, he called a council meeting.
When Matthew walked into the makeshift meeting room he saw his council sitting around a table on mismatched and worn-out chairs. They each wore matching expressions: a mixture of trepidation and hope. They wondered if Matthew would finally heed their council. Matthew say in the empty chair at the head of the table and looked at each councilmember’s face. A thick silence stretched across the room as the council waited with bated breath for Matthew to speak.
“The last few days have dealt powerful blows against our people and our cause. We are losing too much by raiding and attacking insignificant government buildings. It’s time to increase our resistance. Make sure that people around the nation know of the revolution. We are going to need as much support as possible if this is going to work.”
“I’m sorry Matthew, but I’m not sure I understand, what is it you are planning to do?
“We are going to kill president Payne.”
So they are planning to assassinate the president! How do they plan on doing this? What is happening with Kiara at the moment and will she escape captivity somehow? So this story gets longer and more elaborate the more I think about it and I’m not sure when it will end anymore… but I hope that you’re all enjoying it! If you haven’t then follow the blog to get update notifications! Next post will be up tomorrow!
Kiara woke up handcuffed to a metal desk in a cold, grey room. She looked around and saw two small cameras in opposite corners of the room and was surprised to see that there was no door anywhere in sight. She wondered how they had brought her in. One wall seemed to be made of an opaque glass and Kiara guessed that people were watching her from the other side of it. She steeled her jaw and stared at the glass, resolute and unwavering. A minute or so later, a part of the wall retracted before sliding to the side. Kiara turned from the glass wall to see a woman walk into the room. The woman sat in front of Kiara on a chair on the opposite side of the table.
“Kiara Westwood, second in command to Matthew Sinclair, resident medic at 1-star facility 2, ex-heart-surgeon at Pinecrest hospital. It says here you were on your way to becoming the leading heart-surgeon in the country but were excommunicated due to complications.” The smirk on her face when she drawled the word excommunicated showed Kiara that contrary to her tired tone, the lady enjoyed Kiara’s suffering.
“Our file on you has grown considerably large during your sedation the past few days. I must say when I first heard that you were taken in place of mister Sinclair I was quite angry. Over the past 48 hours however, I have grown positively elated. We have sent new spies to infiltrate your hopeless revolution and it seems that without you, mister Sinclair has no idea how to control the 1-stars. Failed raids have led to the incarceration of over 40 1-stars yesterday alone.” The ladies voice grew positively gleeful by the end of her explanation. Kiara refused to believe the ladies words but a part of her knew how large a part she had played in planning the raids and feared that there might be some truth to the ladies’ words. She knew however, that if there were any truth to the slanderous words, Matthew would soon overcome them and the revolution would once again be in full effect.
Hey! So this post took a little longer to post because I was planning the rest of the story after changing it. I’ve planned most of it by now and the rest of the uploads should go up on schedule! What do you guys think? Is Kiara’s interrogator telling the truth about Matthew? Hope you enjoyed this instalment in Uniform and come back tomorrow to read the next part!
“Stop shooting.” Kiara told them as she picked up Paul’s gun and slotted it through the gap in the boxes. With a small push, she sent the gun across the floor towards the soldiers. Their second gun soon followed.
“Move the boxes.” The group looked at her strangely but followed her orders. She stepped between the boxes with her arms raised and spoke to the soldiers.
“My name is Kiara Westwood, I am the leader of this task force. You asked for Matthew, but he never joined us on this mission. He deemed it too dangerous with the recent rise in government security after our recent raids. Take me prisoner in his place if you wish, but spare my team.”
“Do you reckon she’s telling the truth?” One of the soldiers asked to the others. A wiry man stepped out from between them. Kiara recognised him as a 1-star who had recently joined the cause and was staying in their warehouse.
“She’s Matthew’s second in command. I doubt that they would both be on a mission, especially with the increased government security. I think she’s telling the truth, but she might be just as valuable to us as Matthew. She’s his link to the 1-stars. He doesn’t know enough about how they are run or how to control them without her.” Kiara ground her teeth with each piece of information the 1-star shared with the soldiers. When he finished a guard at the front signalled to her and three guards stepped up to restrain her. Kiara followed them, calm and unresisting. When they were down the hall four gunshots sounded. Tears sprang into her eyes, but she didn’t turn. She didn’t look back. She knew her team was dead.
Matthew nearly broke down when he saw Kiara being led out. He had run from the window and hidden in a forested area by the granary, unable to leave his team and Kiara behind. He couldn’t escape without knowing his team’s fate. He watched as the soldiers poured out, hoping that the rest of his team would be with them. His hope was lost as the last soldier left the building. He watched the soldiers climb into their trucks and prepare to leave. Suddenly, his heart rate shot up and a silent gasp flew from his mouth when he saw someone who he recognised talking with the last group of soldiers. A single name left his lips.
So what do you think about Altair’s return? Was anyone expecting that? What do you guys think will happen to Kiara now? Follow me to get notifications on the next posts and comment any thoughts or ideas regarding the story. I’d love to hear them!!!
